The Sopranos Writers Working On New Mafia Drama

Veterans of the highly prestigious mob genre are not done yet.

‘The Sopranos’ producer Terence Winter and ‘Goodfellas’ screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi are coming together to give us an offer we could not refuse: another drama revolving around mobsters and crime in America.

Showtime confirmed to Deadline that it is developing the hour-long drama, which is inspired “by Pileggi’s in-depth chronology of organized crime in America -- as seen through the eyes of the mafia’s First Family.”

Pedigree Hype

Although Showtime has yet to release any significant details about the drama, the still-untitled work of art is generating a lot of buzz, thanks in no small part to the creative genius of Winter an Pileggi.

The Daily Mail remembers that Winter won four Emmys for his work on The Sopranos, which explores the history of organized crime in America. He’s also the creator, writer, and executive producer of ‘Boardwalk Empire.’

Meanwhile, Pileggi has earned himself an Oscar nomination for Goodfellas, which was originally adapted from his book ‘Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family.’ He also co-wrote the script for ‘Casino’ in 1995, and helped produce ‘American Gangster’ and ‘The Irishman.’

However, not everyone is excited about what could easily be the next hit in the mafia subgenre.

Some are rolling their eyes, as if to say “This again?”

Early Criticism

Slash Film, for instance, wonders if Winter’s and Pileggi’s previous works have left anything unsaid.

“While their pedigrees are impressive, part of me (foolishly? We’ll see) wonders if there’s anything new to say about the mafia in America,” wrote one of its critics. “This is a story that’s been told and re-told again and again from multiple angles in our popular culture, so I’m just hoping this show is able to add to the topic in a significant way.”

Well, he might just be forgetting that another legend is working on the upcoming series. Brain Grazer, a titan in the industry and half the powerhouse duo behind the lucrative production house Imagine Entertainment.

Fearless forecast: this new mob drama series will be many things, but it will not be a flop -- not with the talent, flair, and experience of the people making it happen.
