Last week, Democratic Mayor Ted Wheeler all but told President Donald Trump to get lost when the latter offered federal aid to put an end to the violence in Portland.

Now, Wheeler is blaming Trump after a right-wing protester was murdered in light of the escalating riots and burgeoning violence in the city.

“Do you seriously wonder, Mr. President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence?” Wheeler said in an address broadcast by NBC News. “It’s you who have created the hate and division. It’s you who have not found a way to say the names of Black people killed by police officers even as people in law enforcement have, and it’s you who claimed that white supremacists are good people.” 

“I’d appreciate either the president support us or he stay the hell out of the way,” the mayor added.

Trump’s Clapback

The president’s response came almost instantaneously.

“Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor,” Trump wrote in a tweet.

“The people of Portland, like all other cities & parts of our great Country, want Law & Order. The Radical Left Democrat Mayors, like the dummy running Portland, or the guy right now in his basement unwilling to lead or even speak out against crime, will never be able to do it!” Trump continued.

Cognitive Dissonance

Since we’re talking accountability, recall that Trump urged Wheeler to let him bring in the National Guard to subdue the violence in Portland as early as last weekend.

At this point, left-led violent protests in Portland have persisted for more than 90 days.

Still, Wheeler is baring his unwillingness to dissolve political divides, albeit ever so slightly, to stop the bleeding in his city.

In his letter-response to the federal government, Wheeler said, “No thanks.” 

Now that people are reportedly paying for this political squabble with no less than their lives, the public can’t be faulted for demanding less finger-pointing, and more action to end violence, once and for all.
