One tweet from Kanye West caused millions of Twitter users to check their calendars yesterday. It was Independence Day in the U.S., but the rapper’s announcement seemed to be more fitting for April Fool’s.

“We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future. I am running for president of the United States,” he wrote on Twitter, followed by an emoji of the American flag and a hashtag: #2020VISION

The declaration caused social media by storm, mostly because the West family has been very vocal about supporting Donald Trump. 

In fact, NBC already reported that Kanye was poised to vote for reelection in the coming polls.

Now, if Yeezy is serious about his plan to relocate to the White House, he will end up as an unlikely challenger to Trump -- and Joe Biden, of course.

We have yet to receive word if Kanye has submitted any paperwork to bring his #2020VISION come to life, but he has already bagged one important endorsement. 

“You have my full support!” replied Tesla CEO Elon Musk on West’s tweet.

It’s either the West-Musk duo just upped their pranking game, or Americans really have to start imagining a future where Kim Kardashian is first lady.

Or not.

We’d have to wait for actual election surveys to see how West is doing in terms of voter perception, but here are some of the most-’liked’ replies to his surprise Twitter announcement as of writing:

We Should Have Known

Journalistic evidence suggests no one should have been surprised that Kanye West had such grandiose ambitions brewing in the back burner. 

The Washington Examiner reminds us that it was Trump himself who said the rapper “could very well be” a future presidential candidate.

Back then, it didn’t seem like West was keen on going toe to toe with Trump, who is now vying for a second term.

He simply replied, “Only after 2024. Let’s stop worrying about the future. All we really have is today. We just have today.”

Then, in January last year, Kanye published a tweet that simply said “2024.”

Maybe it’s the global pandemic speaking, but it seems West no longer wants to put any of his dreams on hold. As they say, no day but today.
