Weekly NBA Wrap: 10 September 2020
The team with the best win-loss record this year has officially been eliminated from the playoffs. Based on recent NBA history, a favourite usually ends up winning the championship, but this year is like no other. If there was ever a year that an underdog could win the whole thing, this is it. Miami destroying Milwaukee in 5 games is proof. Could Miami win the championship? Only time will tell - but in the meantime here is everything you need to know about the past week in the NBA!
Here’s your Weekly NBA Wrap.
Steve Nash to Brooklyn
One of the greatest point guards in NBA history has landed the job of coaching the Brooklyn Nets and their two superstars, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. He will become the 23rd head coach of the Nets after signing a 4-year deal. Durant and Nash have an existing relationship from their time together at the Warriors and it appears Durant gave the green light. Durant even used to call Nash “Yoda” when he was playing at Golden State.
The appointment was followed by strong views from the media, most notably from Stephen A Smith. “This is one of the toughest positions I’ve ever had to take,” Smith said on ESPN's First Take. “Ladies and gentlemen, there’s no way around this. This is white privilege. This does not happen for a Black man.”
Smith received significant backlash from others in the media, including Charles Barkley. “I was very disappointed in some of the guys on television today talking about white privilege. Very disappointed,” Barkley said on TNT’s Inside the NBA. “They’re like, ‘Well, this doesn’t happen to Black guys.’ And I’m like, ‘It happened to Doc Rivers. It happened to Jason Kidd. It happened to Derek Fisher.’ "
One thing is for sure though, Nash will be under the pump next year to take the star studded Nets to a Championship.
(Almost) Unanimous ROY
As expected, Ja Morant was voted the Rookie of the Year (ROY) but he was one vote shy of claiming an unanimous ROY. Morant finished ahead of Kendrick Nunn (Miami) and Zion Williamson (New Orleans) in the voting and led all rookies in points (17.8) and assists (7.3). Morant has some crazy hops and he showcased this throughout the year. To pay tribute to Morant winning ROY, check out his Vince Carter inspired practice dunk below.
The Patient Superstar
Nikola Jokic is a superstar in the NBA, helping carry Denver to the second round of the playoffs. Jokic isn’t your typical NBA player though, he doesn't have the explosive athleticism and speed as other stars in the league.
In a post-game interview, Jokic was asked why he was so patient when gets the ball in a game. His answer had social media in raptures.
“I’m patient because I cannot really run fast. That’s my only option.”

OG Oh My!
We witnessed one of the great playoff game-winners this week when OG Anunoby of the Toronto Raptors nailed a three at the buzzer. To put the shot into perspective, if he had missed the Raptors would have gone down 0-3 to the Celtics.
With 0.5 seconds left, Kyle Lowry threw the perfect pass to OG. To make it even more difficult, Lowry probably had one of the tallest people in the world (Tacko Fall) in front of him on the inbound pass. See below for evidence:
The NBA world is watching in anticipation as this memorable series is now entering a game seven.
Big Enough, Kanye?
Celebrities all around the world are tuning into the playoffs, including Kanye West. Kanye posted a tweet showing a video of him watching game six of the Celtics versus Raptors series. However, this is Kanye and he decided it was best to watch the game on a 100 foot screen. He also decided it was best to stand right next to the screen. Classic Kanye.
