Dave Chappelle Drops a New Special
In the socially distanced surrounds of his home in Ohio, iconic comedian Dave Chappelle made history by hosting what was perhaps the first live standup event that didn't require patrons to honk their horns in place of laughter.
"I got to tell you, this is like the first concert in North America since all this s*** happened, so like it or not, it's history. It's going to be in the books", said a carefully spoken Chappelle during the early moments of the special.
The new special dropped on Netflix's YouTube channel is fittingly called '8:46', refer to both Chappelle's time of birth, as well as the amount of time police officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on George Floyd's neck.
However, this special is not so much a standup special, but a political one.
Chappelle took the opportunity to share his sentiments in the wake of George Floyd's murder and the subsequent protests and riots that have not only gone coast to coast in the United States, but also took place in the UK, Europe and Australia.
"When I watched that tape, I understood this man knew he was going to die... for some reason that I still don't understand, all these f##*ing police stood there with their hands in their pockets. What are you signifying that you can kneel on a man's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds and feel like you wouldn't get the wrath of God?"
Chappelle shared a handful of stories of men of color who had been subject to unlawful violence and had their lives taken away from them by the police, before diving into a number of retaliatory attacks on police from men of color that had served in the US military.
"What are they doing? Why would our guys do that? Black people from the military? Because they believe, just like they did when they were joining the fucking military, that they were fighting acts of terror. These are our people, these are our countrymen."
